We are currently completing the comprehensive brickwork package for one of Brighton's most significant residential developments at Preston Barracks on Lewes Road. This major project, being delivered by Roberts Gallagher Construction, comprises 369 residential units plus 9,000 square feet of commercial space across eight blocks, with our skilled Bricklaying Contractors responsible for all external brickwork elements throughout the development.

The Preston Barracks development represents a £98 million investment creating a northern gateway into Brighton, featuring a mix of private sale, shared ownership and affordable rent homes. Our brickwork contribution spans all eight blocks, which range up to 10 floors in height, requiring advanced technical skills and extensive project coordination to deliver the complex facade requirements.

Brickwork Across Multiple Buildings

This substantial development features challenging architectural requirements, with our brickwork team delivering complex double-height tapered brick facades across multiple blocks. The varying building heights, from lower-rise structures to 10-storey towers, demanded careful planning and skilled execution to maintain consistent quality standards throughout the entire development.

Technical Challenges 

The double-height tapered brickwork facades represent some of the most technically demanding aspects of our contract. These architectural features require precise calculation and expert craftsmanship to create the intended visual effect whilst maintaining structural integrity. Our experienced Bricklayers worked closely with the main contractor to deliver these distinctive facade elements on schedule.

Walling & Cladding Systems

Working alongside curtain walling and rainscreen cladding installations, our brickwork had to integrate seamlessly with these facade systems. This coordination required careful sequencing and precise measurement to create clean interfaces between different materials, contributing to the development's contemporary architectural appearance.

Project Continuity Challenges

The Preston Barracks project experienced significant disruption in June 2023 when the previous main contractor entered administration, bringing construction to a complete halt. Roberts Gallagher Construction was subsequently appointed to complete the development, with our brickwork team adapting to new management structures and revised completion schedules.

Maintaining Quality Standards 

Despite the project interruption, our brickwork team maintained consistent quality standards throughout the transition period. We worked collaboratively with Roberts Gallagher Construction to assess existing work, identify outstanding requirements, and develop completion strategies for the final three blocks and podium facade elements.

Mixed-Use Developments

The development includes both residential and commercial elements, with our brickwork services covering all building types within the scheme. The commercial spaces comprise seven units including a medical centre, pharmacy and local convenience store, each requiring specific brickwork detailing to meet different functional requirements.
