Bricklaying For Scaperfield Development

Sackville Construction Ltd completed all of the brickwork for the Scaperfield Development in Brighton, located at Preston Barracks on Lewes Road (BN2 4GL). This substantial project, valued at £39 million, features three towers ranging between eight and fifteen storeys, resulting in 555 purpose-built student accommodation units. The development also includes communal spaces such as a gym, cinema room, library and craft rooms.

Constructing A Modern Student Complex

Our role focused on delivering the brickwork required for this significant scheme. We collaborated closely with the main contractor to make sure each aspect of the bricklaying process met the design specifications and timetable. The building’s façade combines intermixed brick and rainscreen cladding, meaning our brickwork had to integrate seamlessly with the other exterior finishes. Piled foundations and reinforced concrete (RC) frames formed the structural core of each block, and our team worked methodically around these components.

During the construction phase, we paid particular attention to quality control and site safety. This approach involved routine inspections, ongoing communication with Project Managers, and careful scheduling. Bricklaying at these heights calls for meticulous planning, especially when working across multiple towers. By monitoring daily progress and managing resources efficiently, we managed to finish on time whilst keeping disruption to a minimum.

Once the main structures were established, we proceeded to fit out each block. The on-site effort also extended to finishing touches, from intricate brick features to ensuring that the external walls met strict design and performance requirements. Throughout the process, we worked in partnership with other trades to align services, minimise potential delays, and produce a cohesive final product.

Completing The Brickwork

Completion of the brickwork in 2021 was a landmark moment for everyone involved. By the time the student accommodation opened its doors, all 555 rooms were ready to welcome new occupants looking for modern, convenient living spaces. The development’s communal amenities (such as gym, cinema room, library, and craft areas) create a comfortable atmosphere that helps students feel at home.
